Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QDC)?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution allows eligible individuals age 70½ or older to transfer funds directly from an IRA to a qualified nonprofit organization without recognizing the distribution as taxable income.
Can my IRA gift count toward my Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?
Yes. For many donors, a qualified charitable distribution can satisfy all or part of an annual required minimum distribution.
Do I need to transfer my entire IRA?
No. You may choose to make a gift in any amount up to the annual IRS-qualified maximum.
Is there a limit to how much I can give through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)
Yes. In 2026, eligible individuals may transfer up to $111,000 directly from an IRA to qualified charitable organizations such as Fort Worth Opera through a QCD. Couples with separate IRAs may each make qualified charitable distributions up to the annual IRS limit. Please consult your financial or tax advisor regarding your specific situation and current IRS guidelines.
Do I receive a charitable deduction?
Because Qualified Charitable Distributions are generally excluded from taxable income, they do not also qualify for a charitable income tax deduction.
Additional Ways to Support Through Your IRA
For Individuals Age 59½ or Older
If you are at least age 59½, you may take distributions from your IRA without penalty and choose to make a charitable contribution to Orchestra Miami.
Beneficiary Designations
